Past Student: Greg Tucker (1963 – 1968)

Greg Tucker is the current CEO of Maurice Blackburn and attended Rosanna PS along with his older brother and sister in the 60’s.

Greg attended Rosanna Primary School from 1963 to 1968. His older brother, Peter, was there 4 years earlier and his older sister, Sue, 2 years earlier. The Tuckers lived in St James Road, Rosanna, and they walked to and from the school - sometimes stopping halfway for some chips or potato cakes on the way home.

Greg recalls, “Our period at Rosanna PS was in the days of the gravel oval and the big incinerator at the school. The oval across the road towards the railway line was just available as I left the school. There was also the milk for morning tea and pies and sausage rolls at lunchtime - not to mention the

Sunnyboys, Razzs and Glugs”. “I had a range of excellent teachers, particularly Mr Gardiner in 6th grade. He actually taught us to appreciate poetry and how to recite it”.

Hi Greg. I think that is my sister Sue Smith in the front row. I gets a bit blurry when I try to enlarge it. I am a few years behind you, but I share the same gravel oval and after school memories as you.

Hi Greg thanks for the post and photo, I have one somewhere in my filing system. Congrats on career after leaving our wonderful primary school.
I too remember the gravel oval with the gum tees as our goal posts for 3 goals in, the fish shop where you got 4 potato cakes for 5c!!! and numerous Sunny boys where the free ones were treasured.. For info I am at the end of second row RHS, other end of row is Tim Linton (who my mum Naida (see this website) tells me is a doctor in Nepal area). Some of others who i recognise in the photo which is blurry when enlarged are Lorenz G, Keith G, next to you, Lindsey H, Judy H, Sylvia S, Sue F, Karen E, Dawn S, Robyn M, Peter W, Peter W, David D and Ross H?. and of course our teacher Mr Gardiner who I also still remember for his love of poetry, particularly "A Sunburnt Country'. Hi Greg, Thanks for your post. What a surprise to see your photo. You were in grade 5B as I was (Heather Brissett), & we shared the same desk (maybe it was an attempt by Mrs Langdon to stop me talking)! It probably made no difference to me though, as I had 4 brothers! In the grade 5 photo I am three from the left in the second back row. I also had four older siblings and one younger brother from the 1950's through to the 1970's.Maybe your brother Peter may know my brother Neil Brissett and Sue may know my brother Grant Brissett. If you attend the Anniversary tomorrow I'll try & catch up!

Hope you had a good celebration - it is all a lifetime ago yet it seems remarkably close. I also remember Mr Gardiner getting a person from the education department to come in and hear the class recite 'The Daffodils' by Wordsworth. I also remember playing down ball by the side of the school wall and losing most of my marbles to a guy named Paul Jesuvic (?).

I want to record my gratitude to, our teacher, Mr Gardner at Rosanna State School for pursuing his interest in poetry with his grade 6 class in 1968 so that he could show us the way to its riches. Of course this was not easy with the wriggling, giggling masses in a suburban primary school. The way in which he was uplifted by our collective cadence was wondrous as he seemed to float high above the classroom.

Mr Gardner's body language demonstrated how much it meant to him; he conducted our recitals as if he was leading an orchestra. He thought it was so special he got a colleague from the Education Department to come and hear our rendition of The Daffodils and A Sunburnt Country.

How did a person teaching in a grade 6, middle class, government primary school, buried in suburbia, ever come to want to introduce all those images to minds so young? Something beyond the syllabus, beyond the battles of a normal day; he sits as an inspiration in my mind a person who took the time to share a little bit of his heart with a bunch on people who he would never see again. I remember all the verses and many others to this day due the roses he planted in the gardner bed that year. I have a whole stanza of my life that stemmed from this year.
