Italian
Studies continue to show that learning additional languages increases critical thinking skills, creativity, and flexibility of mind.
At Rosanna Primary School, Italian is our language of study. All students from year prep to year 6 attend a weekly well-planned program that not only promotes the learning of another language, but also aims to develop an appreciation for other cultures. Learning a language in addition to English helps to increase students’ awareness of the multilingual and multicultural nature of Australia and world societies. It encourages students to value the diversity of the wider community. Students understand that Australian life and culture are influenced by different ways of life. They learn that there are similarities and differences between languages, and notice how these are related.
During Italian sessions at Rosanna Primary School, students learn to communicate at a basic level using teacher prompts and modeling. They begin by imitating simple words and phrases and responding to familiar games and routines such as questions about self and family. Examples of some activities include, matching words, writing descriptions, lists, labels and captions and using familiar words and phrases through games and role-plays. Repetition and recycling help children to identify frequently used words and simple phrases, and help students recognise the purpose and intention of simple texts.
Students apply their learning in a variety of ways: through speaking and listening, reading and writing, creating art works, posters and board games, playing language games and participating in ICT (online games and iPads) and performance (drama, singing, puppetry, dance and role plays).
The Italian program is organised with cross-curricular awareness. It’s not always a lesson about learning words and phrases. The lesson may be linked to science, maths, visual arts, performing arts, ICT, humanities and social science (history and geography) or health and physical education.
