Book of the Year - We're Finished!

21/9/2015

Where can you find princesses, invisible elephants, superheroes and a lost sock? In our students' very own picture story books, written and illustrated as part of our Book of the Year competition!
The finished books are all amazing and are a credit to the huge efforts of each and every student. Ms McIntosh and Mr Jackson had the unenviable task of choosing the winners from each year level and their deliberations lasted for some days - such was the calibre of the stories!

Congratulations to the following students who were presented with their medallions at the end of term assembly:
Prep: 1st Inuli, 2nd Brianna, 3rd Miranda
Year 1: 1st Georgie,2nd Rose,3rd Yusuf
Year 2: 1st Nethmi, 2nd Alveena, 3rd AmyYear 3:
Year 3: 1st Ava, 2nd Isabella, 3rd Emma
Year 4: 1st Liam, 2nd Matilda, 3rd Oisin
Year 5: 1st Angus, 2nd Amelia, 3rd Natasha
Year 6: 1st Paige, 2nd Luke, 3rd Benjamin

Well done to all students - there are certainly some future authors amongst you!

Learning in the Library

Wow! What a fantastic morning 3/4W had at the Rosanna Library on Monday. The students were involved in different Augmented Reality activities that really blew our minds! Augmented Reality is a type of virtual reality that aims to copy the world's environment in a computer - a bit complicated, but all you really need to know is that it's AWESOME! The students loved seeing dinosaurs, deep-sea creatures and NASA spacecraft in 3D, but their imaginations really went wild when using the iPad app 'Quiver.' After colouring in their picture, they used the app to make their creation come to life - cries of "this is so cool!" rang out through the library!

Each class at Rosanna Primary will visit the library over the next few months to share in these experiences and see what else the library has to offer. We are so lucky to be building this relationship between the library and the school as it allows us to extend our resources beyond our own library. In the future, we plan on visiting the library for a variety of purposes, including researching different inquiry topics.

Keep an eye on the school newsletter for information about special events at the library - there's always something exciting happening and most of the time - it's free!  In the meantime, why not sign up to the library yourself?! It's a great place to visit and relax with a book!

Scintillating Science Celebration

17/9/2015

Students in the 4/5/6 area threw open their doors to their peers and our whole community to share their ideas and inquiries after a term of investigation. Focusing on energy, students worked individually and collaboratively to explore questions they had shaped. Some chose to explore the use of electric cars while others constructed Lego cars powered by solar power. There were those who explored the impacts of nuclear energy, while others constructed models of wind and wave turbine generators. Some created power points or movies and others models or posters.

It was evident in students' answers provided in response from some probing parent questions that there was indeed some rich learning. All who were present this afternoon left a little bit more passionate in understanding how our world works.

Our sustainability team and members of 3/4S were selling their garden produce this afternoon! Parents left, not only with their brains stimulated after a visit to the 4/5/6 Science Expo but also with herbs and lettuces from our garden. The excited students eagerly reported at the end of the day they had sold over $70.00 worth of goods that will go back into seedlings to planted early next term.

We look forward to further harvests into the future.

Spectacular time!

The hard work of the last six months has finally come to an exciting climax... the Victoria State Schools Spectacular was on last weekend! Our twenty participants from the 5/6 area have been rehearsing twice a week to perfect the complex choreography in preparation for the two rehearsal days and performance day at Hisense Arena.

On Saturday, the students performed as part of the Mass Dance ensemble in front of huge audiences - a truly unique experience! What's even more special about this production is the fact that all performers are students from Victorian state schools - singers, dancers, musicians - even circus performers!

We are so proud of the dedication our students have shown, and we have enjoyed sharing the experience with them both on the day and back at school on reflection of the advernture. Well done to all involved and huge thanks to Mrs Weston, Miss Tyalor, Miss Urquhart and Mrs Bright for the amazing work they have done with the dancers!

Working Bees Make Honey!

An energetic group of children and parents gathered last Saturday to mow, sweep, shovel, dig, lift, screw, construct and simply, help out our school. A vibrant collection of workers cleared out the 'Green Shed' on the oval, constructing shelves and sorting storage. It was an important chance to prepare for the upcoming Twilight Fair in November. The lawns have thrived in our warmer weather and both the upper and lower lawns were cut. Softfall that had been washed from the lower playground was gathered up and redistributed under the playground equipment. A great deal of excitement was generated with the installations taking shape in the maths garden. Please make sure you have a look as this learning space takes shape. A special thanks to all who came along and to Mr Jackson for, once again, leading the charge!

We are delighted to announce our success in applying for a $1,200 grant from Telstra. Telstra Kids funds the little things that can make a big difference to kids' lives, helping kids to play and learn.

Our Telstra Kids grant will be used to enhance our Maths Garden by installing a Sun Clock, providing pavers, timber, hardware and paint for additional mathematical activities. A huge thanks to a local community member from Telstra, who is a colleague of one of our School Council members for applying for the funding for us. We are very excited to share in the million dollars the Telstra Foundation provides each year to help kids across Australia to connect to their local communities.

Keep an eye on the Math's Garden. Wonderful things are miraculously growing!

Working Bee Invitation

There is lots to do on Saturday 12 September from 1:00pm til 4:00pm as mum, dads and everyone who is able, lifts a shovel in support of Rosanna Primary. Our Working Bee will focus on cleaning up the 'Green Oval' as well as 'the shed' as we move towards our Twilight Fair. We are also eager to construct some of the activities in the Maths Garden. As spring emerges there are trees to prune and gutters to clean. We are indeed privileged to share our wonderfully green school grounds and our working bees ensure they continue to remain safe and well kept.
