The team of teachers in the 3/4 area are very keen for all students to learn their multiplication facts as soon as possible. For this to be achieved, students must be given ample time at home to practise, recite or even sing their tables facts consistently, until they are locked into memory. The goal is automaticity and, with practice, this can be achieved by all students.
This term, students were assessed to see which multiplication facts they knew and which facts they didn't yet know. Students are now all aware of which multiplication facts they need to work on and are encouraged to complete activities during the week to help master their multiplication facts.
Students will be regularly tested and will progress to the next set of multiplication facts only when they can confidently recall all the facts in the level they are at.
Some ways to help at home are:
-purchase a 'times tables' chart and place on the back of the toilet or in your child's bedroom.
-use Mathletics
-practise writing out the multiplication facts they are focusing on daily.
-play multiplication bingo games with family members
-sing-a-long with 'times tables' tunes on Mathletics
-make yourself some flash cards
-test often in the car on the way to school
-go onto http://learn-timestables.com/
-download apps developed for improving multiplication fact knowledge
We are expecting to see all students develop mastery of the multiplication facts throughout the year.
