Last week, the 3/4 area began maths groups again for the term. The focus this term is to develop and extend the students’ understanding of mental strategies and written algorithms when multiplying numbers. The teachers previously pre-tested the students to ascertain any prior knowledge the students had, in order to group them accordingly with other students of similar abilities. After the first session, the teachers were very impressed with how focused the students were.
In the 3/4 area, we feel that providing students with the opportunity to work with other like-minded students is a fantastic way to ensure students are working towards their next growth point and to familiarize themselves with students from other classrooms.
Already, we have seen many students have ‘ahhh…’ moments as they pick up a new skill or strategy.
The 3/4 area will be continuing with maths groups on a Thursday throughout this term.
Andy Glembin, Kristy Weston & Anita Simpson
