Visit from a Scientist

23/10/2015

On Tuesday the 20th of October the 4/5/6 area and 1/2W had the fantastic opportunity to meet a real life Scientist.
Lynda, who is a scientist for a company that makes flu vaccines and antivemons, came in and completed an experiment and presented a PowerPoint about the work she does.

The experiment involved extracting (taking out) DNA (the building blocks of all the cells in our body) from strawberries, using, water, salt, methylated spirits, detergent, and filter paper. If successfully extracted, the DNA looks like a thread-like cloud at the top of the mixture.

Lynda was very impressed with the questions the students asked and loved answering them the best she could.

Fun with Hands on Science

This term our grade 1/2 students will be learning about Weather, Water and how it affects us. But firstly, we wanted to start the term off with a fun and exciting incursion to draw our students in and get them curious about Water and Weather.
The team at Hands on Science came to Rosanna Primary School on Tuesday and Wednesday to work with all our students, and we all had a wonderful time!
Firstly, we brainstormed words we knew about Weather and then broke them up into 3 categories- Sun/Earth, Air and Water. We learnt about the southern and northern hemisphere, the equator and how we have different seasons, especially in different countries. We discussed these different places using a world globe.
Secondly, we started by learning about the Water Cycle. We sang songs, learnt about the words evaporation, condensation and precipitation. They were tricky scientific words, so we sang them to help us to remember them. We joined a group to participate in many experiments to help us understand the water cycle.
Thirdly, we learnt about how leaves and plants transpire as well and we participated in an experiment where we put leaves in different places, like the fridge, classroom, outside in the sun and found out what happened. We also learnt about hot air, cold water, ice, wind-tornadoes and what happens to all these things.
We had a great time learning about the Weather and the Water Cycle. We made lots of predictions and experiments to find answers! It was great.
Thanks to Angela from Hands on Science for teaching us all in the 1/2 area about these exciting science concepts.
