Greetings all those reading our wonderful bits and pieces here in the 1/2 area. Below you will find the latest area news and lots more information about Term 1.
There was a wide range of investigations students participated in on Friday. Students and staff had shaped opportunities for questions to be raised and explorations to be had. The learning was rich as evidenced in some of the student comments below.
There are lots of activities that we like doing and there are new things to discover.
At the Tinkering Spot you get to take things apart. You get to see inside things.
Cooking is fun. We make biscuits but we are not allowed to eat them at school.
I love the Lego and the Woodwork Table. I like making aeroplanes. I'm learning that using PVA glue and nails is hard because they stick together and then they just slip.
Sewing is really hard because the string gets all caught up. It's good to sew stuff. I'm making a blindfold and a top.
I've made an aeroplane by making two paper planes and stapling them together. The heavier it is the further it goes. It also depends how the winds are blowing. It goes a little bit fast.
sStudents in the 1/2 area are in the midst of their Daily 5 training, a new experience to most students in the area. The Daily 5 is a Literacy structure that promotes student independence while developing a love of reading and writing. It consists of five activities: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work and Listen to Reading.
Students have been discussing the best way to do each of the activities, including staying focused and working quietly. Then, it's time to practise and build reading and writing stamina. They have also been learning about how to choose 'Good Fit Books,' books that are suited to their interests and reading ability. It has been fantastic to see students spending their library sessions searching for the perfect book!
Here's a few thoughts from students in 1/2K...
I like Work on Writing because you can write letters - Jacob A

Once the training is complete, Daily 5 will form the structure for our Literacy sessions for the rest of the year, with the teacher supporting individual or small groups of students to improve their reading and writing skills.
