On Friday 15th September the grade 1/2's had a great dinner at school. We had chips and delicious pizza. When we were mid-way through our fruit Mrs McIntosh called us over to Chandler Hall to see the Amazing Danny the Magician. He was extremely funny. Danny turned a white balloon into a remote control bird. Afterwards we all ate chocolate coated ice cream. The ice cream was delicious. Then the grade 1's went home. While the grade1's were going home grade 2's were getting ready for a night walk. We saw 2 cute, furry possums. When the night walk was over the grade 2 girls brought their suitcases to Chandler Hall to watch a movie. The movie we watched was Sing, it was a new movie. We didn't watch all of the movie because it was very late so we slept. In the morning we got dressed and had breakfast.
To continue our learning about the olden days we had a dress up day on Friday 1st September. We transported back in time to recreate the olden days at school. After a morning of strict classroom learning we rotated through different activities including;
Hey! Did you hear about the cool excursion the 1/2's had to Cooper's Settlement? We did it on Tuesday the 1st of August. We got there by bus and we did this because we are learning about the olden days in Inquiry. It was SUPER FUN! This is a list of what we did at Cooper's Settlememnt;
We also did some bush dancing with a partner. I loved it! My favourite bit was the horse and cart becasue we got to feed the Clydesdale horse named Ben some carrots and we got to ride in the cart. I learnt that they had very strict rules in the olden days at school.

At the moment students in the 3/4 area are learning about hardware and software as well as input and output devices. Here is a link that provides students with something to to think about.
The students in the 1/2 area have been getting very creative and having a wonderful time during our Investigations sessions. They have been exploring design with a range of different materials. They were encouraged to be curious learners and supported to develop a question about an area of interest. Our Investigations involve hands on activities that encompasses creative thinking, maths skills, hand eye coordination, researching, problem solving, team work, and much more. Our four classrooms have been exploring different areas of design.
Mrs Whitechurch’s group have been investigating plants and what they need to grow. They have discussed with Ms McIntosh about designing and planting a lovely garden bed in the school grounds, and received expert advice from Denis. The student’s discussed what types of plants grow best at this time of year and how to look after them. They planted seedlings in their group and were amazed at how quickly they have grown. The veggie garden is beginning to take shape.
In Mrs Rowell and Mrs Smith’s group, the students have been exploring Woodwork. They are developing skills to make and repair with different types of wood. They have been designing and experimenting with these materials. They wrote letters to Mr Jackson, Bunnings and an expert, inviting them to come and share their knowledge and skills with us. We are looking forward to making our own birdhouse creation on the 10th of June.
In Miss Lange’s group, the students have been developing the understanding of how garments are made. They have been designing and experimenting with patterns and learning how to hand sew which has been great for their fine motor abilities and hand-eye coordination. They have been eager to design a pattern to make a garment for their favourite toy or teddy. They are going to catch the train to Heidelberg to Darn Cheap Fabrics to purchase all the materials they need to create a fashion statement.
In Mrs Weston and Ms Adams’ group, the students have been exploring their cake decorating skills using icing, cake fondant and piping. They have enjoyed experimenting and developing design techniques using these materials. They are also further developing their ICT skills, researching cake designs. They are looking forward to designing and creating a cake for a particular celebration. On Friday, 10th June, the students are walking to Rosanna shops to purchase all the ingredients needed to create a cake fit for MasterChef!
Our Investigations are rich in many areas of learning and development and the students have been so engaged and motivated during these sessions.
On Wednesday 4th May, all of the 1/2 classes were visited by a special four-legged friend. This beautiful dog was called Marli, and was accompanied by her owner, Eva. Eva and Marli came to Rosanna Primary School to teach the 1/2 students about responsible pet ownership and safety around dogs.
Firstly the students were shown a series of pictures where they had to identify how a family was being safe with their pets. After that they looked at dogs in different scenarios. Some were happy, some were angry and some were scared. A few students were chosen to perform a role play demonstrating what a person should do in each situation. Students were then introduced to different ways of identifying a dangerous dog, including a warning collar. Following this activity, students were engaged in a song and dance where they learnt about how to approach someone else’s dog. The final part of the session was very exciting and some students were invited to come up the front and meet Marli.
Overall, the experience was enjoyed by everyone!
